Meals during the clinical trial

Every day, a professional caterer prepares the meals and delivers them to our research center. These meals are carefully tailored to the protocols of the clinical trial and are heated on-site. The type of meals offered varies depending on the specific trial. There are general meals and so-called study-specific meals. Let's explain both types of meals below.

General meals

For clinical trials that prescribe general meals, you have the freedom to decide how much you want to eat during the scheduled meal times. However, the staff members advise you to consume at least something during the main meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

During clinical trials with a multi-day duration, you have the option to choose a portion of the evening meals during your stay.

Typically, you will be given a choice between two menus, both of which are also available as vegetarian options.

Study-specific meals

In certain clinical trials with study-specific meals, it is crucial that all participants have a similar food intake throughout the trial.

During study-specific meals, you will receive a meal with specific quantities and possibly with or without certain ingredients. The staff members will request that you consume the complete meals within a specified time, including mandatory snacks.

The quantities may vary for men and women, and the number of study-specific meals can differ depending on the research. It can be for a single day, multiple days, or the entire duration of your stay.

Food restrictions during the trial

Sharp spices, alcohol, chocolate, coffee, tea, and cola are not allowed during the trial and will not be included in the menu. Fortunately, we do have decaffeinated coffee and caffeine-free tea available.

These restrictions are in place because the mentioned products can have an impact on the research results. For example, they may influence the breakdown of medications in the body or interfere with the measurement of side effects.

In the trial you are participating in, there may be additional restrictions regarding food. This may include not allowing cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli and cauliflower), grapefruit juice, or orange juice. If these restrictions apply to the trial you are involved in, these products will not be available during your stay at the research center.

High-fat breakfast, light breakfast, or low-fat lunch

In certain trials, it may be necessary for you to consume a high-fat breakfast, light breakfast, or low-fat lunch. This is of great importance for the absorption of the investigational substance in your body. During the medical screening, we will show you examples so that you know what to expect if these dietary guidelines apply to the clinical trial you wish to participate in.

During the screening, you will also be asked if you are able to fully consume the high-fat breakfast during the trial, if required.

Snacks

In addition to regular meals, snacks are also provided at various times throughout the day: in the morning, afternoon, and evening.

The type of snack varies depending on the time of day. For example, cookies in the morning, fruit in the afternoon, and a choice between salty snacks or a tasty cake in the evening.

Drinks during the clinical trial

During your stay at the research center, a coffee and tea corner is open from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM. During these hours, you can enjoy unlimited decaffeinated coffee and caffeine-free tea (except during fasting/water fasting periods a few hours before or after taking the investigational substance).

Various soft drinks and juices are also available alongside the snacks.
