Here are some important points to consider for your participation in a clinical trial
For your participation in a clinical trial, there are several restrictions that you must adhere to. These restrictions are important for both your own safety and the quality of the research results.
While it may seem obvious that you are not allowed to consume alcohol, you may wonder why you cannot engage in exercise or eat a sandwich with poppy seeds. Scroll down to read about the reasons for these restrictions.
That's correct! Exercise is indeed very healthy. However, during physical exertion, certain substances, such as creatine kinase, are released in your body. While this is normal, an elevated level of creatinine can indicate certain muscle disorders. To keep these values low, it is necessary for you to refrain from exercising for at least 4 days prior to the start of the clinical trial or medical screening.
Occasionally enjoying an alcoholic drink is not a problem. However, alcohol can have an impact on the effectiveness of medications. It can, for example, enhance the side effects of a medication. Additionally, the investigational drug may slow down the breakdown of alcohol in the body, leading to potential symptoms such as nausea, headaches, or dizziness. Therefore, it is important to refrain from consuming alcohol several days prior to the start of the clinical trial.
Poppy seeds are derived from the poppy plant, also known as the opium poppy. Did you know that this flower is also used for the production of heroin and other opioids? Poppy seeds also contain traces of these opioids. During the pre-screening and before the start of the clinical trial, a drug test is conducted. If you have consumed significant amounts of poppy seeds shortly before the test, it may indicate that you have used opioids. This is something we want to avoid, of course!
